After spending a week in Trieste (where our Internet connection was unfortunately rather lacking, which is my excuse for the lack of posts thus far from Trieste), we arrived yesterday in Venice, the city where the 22gether banner photo at the top of the blog was taken.   Venice isn’t that far from Trieste, actually; it’s just a little more  2-hours by  train between the two cities, so it wasn’t all that far to travel.

After renting what turned out to be palatial one-bedroom apartment in Trieste on the 3rd floor (photos to come in a future post), we’re now renting a ground-floor and very tiny studio apartment here in Venice. On the upside, though, it’s right on a canal. Not the Grand Canal, mind you, but on a smaller canal in a less-touristy part of Venice. The door to our apartment is marked in the following photo by a yellow arrow; it’s just to the right of a small bridge:

I should note that to take that photo, I was standing on another bridge, the one you can see in the photo below, which was taken just after stepping outside our door:

That’s actually one of my favorite little bridges in Venice; it features in a classic Venice photo I took years ago:

But while we’ve walked around this less-touristy neighborhood a bunch in the past, this is our first time actually staying in this part of Venice. Definitely fun to try.

So I’ll leave it here for today. It was a rainy day, and so I didn’t take quite so many photos myself. But I did at least get a shot to show I’m really in Venice, complete with gondolas on the lagoon.  Of course, the irony for me in taking the following photo today was having a vaporetto (“water bus”) sneak into the shot on the right-hand side. You see, today was a big vaporetto strike – and most of them weren’t running. Except for that one, apparently.

Ah well. It at least established the case that we really are in Venice. ;
