I forgot to mention yesterday that the Florida town of Sebastian was actually originally named San Sebastian, a fact which ties very neatly into today’s Travel Tuesday post, as I give you a peek at the Spanish town of San Sebastian, a little city on a seacoast in the Basque country part of Spain near the border with France. Actually, the name of the town to the locals is Donostia, which is what it’s called in Basque, but other languages refer to it as San Sebastian, which is the Spanish name for the town. Chris and I spent 4 days there in June.
I will have more to write-up about the food there at some point, since the town is considered a focal point for foodies. I also took a fair number of photos while we were there, since it was on the coast, there were a lot of water photo ops to be had.
But as usual I haven’t finished sorting through all the photos.
So in the meantime, I thought I’d at least share one of my favorite memories from our visit. At that time of year, sunset is fairly late in evening, and initially I thought there would be a chance to try to get a photo of sunset each day. However, the weather didn’t always cooperate, with the clouds rolling in just when the sunset was about to happen most of the days were were there.
However, one evening the cloud cover wasn’t too heavy, and so we made it over to a vantage point near the beach just in time to catch a view of the sun setting over Donostia.
Enjoy. ![]()

Wow, are you sure that wasn’t Mars setting?
Along with food, San Sebastian is famous for its beaches. I wonder how the beaches of Sebastian compare. And, of course, the food.
Thanks, Will! That was a spectacular color to the sunset that day. You’re right – San Sebastian is known for its beaches in addition the food. I’ll try to get some more information up about both things soon.
When I first saw the name of San Sabastion I thought of the Florida town connected with what the locals call Sebastion’s Inlet. It was only after I started reading the blog and caught the words “4 days in June” that I realized you were not talking about a little ride down to the inlet. That is a great sunset picture. I bet you could make an album of sunrise and sunset pictures and that one could not always tell which was which.
Thanks, Stan! I think I take more sunset photos than sunrise photos, but I probalbly have a lot of sunset ones!
