So we arrived in Vigo, Spain this afternoon.  From our hotel room, when you look to the right, there is a view of the port of Vigo. We’re on the edge of the commercial district in town, though, only a block from a branch of the big El Corte Inglés department store, a fact the clerk pointed out numerous times when we checked in. Too funny.  There are branches of that store all over Spain and Portugal; I know this because the free city maps we’ve gotten so far in Spain have all been sponsored by El Corte Inglés.  Also kind of funny, since the maps always position things in relation to the El Corte Inglés branch or branches in town.

Of course, one of the first – and so far only – things  we have visited here in Vigo  is in fact the supermercado in the basement of that department store down the street. We purchased some lunch supplies in anticipation of tomorrow’s long train ride from Vigo to Lisbon.  The ability to get by train from Vigo to Lisbon is the only reason we decided to stop in Vigo, actually; getting a train that goes over the border to Portugal from Spain isn’t as easy as one might think. But it is possible to do from Vigo. At least on paper.
