Coffee, Milk and Murder

Today we have a quick post for a Thursday that has to do with a mystery, Italian, and coffee. It’s from an Italian mystery book where the protagonist is a barista, i.e. a guy who owns an Italian bar where people go to get coffee as well as alcoholic drinks.  In English the book is called Game for Five, by Marco Malvaldi.  If you want to read the book, STOP READING THIS POST NOW, as I will reveal a major spoiler at the end of this post.

Thinking of You

IMHO, one of the most difficult parts of mastering a foreign language is learning when and where to use the right form of the pronoun “you”. You see,  in many languages, including Italian and German, the two which I have most recently attempted to master,  you need to figure out when to use the “you-familiar” familiar  and when to use the “you-polite” form. The rules that govern when one does this vary from language-to-language and culture-to-culture, and they aren’t necessarily written down or easy to follow. Continue reading
