Dateline: Lisbon

Our trip from Vigo to Lisbon was uneventful, and we arrived without any problems this afternoon.  On the first train, we incorrectly assumed that the sign for the route from Vigo to Porto on the inside of the train car was an indication that we were on the right train. However, although we were indeed on the correct train, the sign in the car turned out NOT to be the sign for the route our train actually took between the same two places.  Ah well. At least it was the right train! Continue reading →

Dateline: Vigo

So we arrived in Vigo, Spain this afternoon.  From our hotel room, when you look to the right, there is a view of the port of Vigo. We’re on the edge of the commercial district in town, though, only a block from a branch of the big El Corte Inglés department store, a fact the clerk pointed out numerous times when we checked in. Too funny.  There are branches of that store all over Spain and Portugal; I know this because the free city maps we’ve gotten so far in Spain have all been sponsored by El Corte Inglés.  Also kind of funny, since the maps always position things in relation to the El Corte Inglés branch or branches in town.

Of course, one of the first – and so far only – things  we have visited here in Vigo Continue reading →

Dateline: Santiago de Compostela

It’s a long way to Santiago … especially when you start in San Sebastian and take the Intercity train across Spain to get there. ;-) Now it wasn’t quite the pilgrim’s route though, which is of course one of the things that Santiago de Compostela is known for. However, we arrived last night in town, where we’ll be only until tomorrow, when we head a bit further south. Internet service in our hotel here is very sporadic … I’m hoping it will at least work long enough to post this link to a webcam, but I’m only cautiously optimistic about that.  But whenever you see this post, enjoy. ;-)

Dateline: San Sebastián

We arrived late yesterday in San Sebastián (called Donostia in the Basque language), which is an hour’s bus ride from Bilbao.  As you will be able to see in this live webcam view — if you view it when the sun is still up here — we’re now on the coast.  The webcam shows the current scene on the La Concha beach, with the Bay of Biscay beyond. The sun hasn’t set yet at 9:00pm as I type this, so there should be plenty of chances to view the beach even from the North American time zones.

Enjoy.

Dateline: Bilbao

So we arrived in Spain last night, after spending over seven weeks in Italy! We here in Bilbao only until Thursday. It’s currently a gray and rainy day here, which figures, since it was a dark and stormy night (as it were) when we arrived last night. ;-)

But it’s perfect weather for our main reason for coming here: a visit to the Guggenheim Museum.  Even in the rain last night the outside looked impressive as we zoomed by it in the cab.

Here’s a link to a website about Bilbao that may or not have a webcam that’s working. You can at least get other information about Bilbao from that site. Enjoy.

Dateline: Bolzano

Sorry for the break in the posting recently. I’ll blame it on a recent focus on packing suitcases as well as packing in as much as possible in Verona during our final days there .That, combined with not always having a computer available to work on and  not always having reliable internet access led to a lack of posts this week.
